Breast Cancer Awareness
Breast cancer, ranked the third most potentially deadly cancer, "is a disease where malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast." (National Breast Cancer Association, 2019) It is important to know about breast cancer and how to detect it early. Learn about your family's history with breast cancer and take precautions such as regular exams at your health physician.

Quick facts:
  • In women, breast cancer is the most common cancer.
  • 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Although far more rare, 1 in 1,000 men will still be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • In the US, a woman develops breast cancer approximately every 2 minutes.
These facts are important because they help us be more aware of the potential risks that breast cancer poses. We should pay attention to our body so that we can recognize something is wrong and when to be seen by a doctor. Both women and men should be doing checkups with their healthcare physicians. Here are some risk factors

Risk factors:

  • Women are 100 times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than men.
  • Women over the age of 55 are 67% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer.
  • If a family member has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you are at a higher risk of being diagnosed in the future.
  • Poor diet and lack of exercise can increase your chances of breast cancer.

Early detection:

The earlier you catch it, the more likely you are to survive. Mammograms are highly recommended by health physicians. If you are over 40, you should have a mammogram done every year. If you are younger than 40, you should be in contact with your doctor about having a mammogram, especially if it is in your family history.

We should be doing yearly checkups for our health for breast cancer because cancer can happen to anyone, and it develops quicker than we expect. Being healthy is key to living a happy, full life.
